Desde que anunciaron por primera vez la salida de Red Dead Redemption, jamás dudé ni un poco que se trataría de un juego grandioso, ¿por qué este nivel de certidumbre en una industria tan llena de sorpresas y decepciones como lo es la de los videojuegos?, por una razón muy simple pero a la vez muy contundente, que el título fue desarrollado por Rockstar, la empresa creadora de la serie Grand Theft Auto. Ahora que el juego ya está disponible puedo decir sin duda que tenía toda la razón, es grandioso, tiene una historia envolvente, el modo de juego es genial, el mundo abierto te dará horas y horas de diversión, cuenta con uno de los multijugadores más vastos y locos disponibles, visualmente es impactante, en pocas palabras, es un clásico instantáneo.
La historia narra la vida de John Marston, un criminal reformado que ahora tiene una vida bastante normal, una esposa, un hijo, deseos de redimir sus acciones del pasado y un gran empeño para trabajar. John anda en busca de quienes fueron parte de su pasado para tratar de cerrar los círculos pendientes de su vida. Pero hacer las paces con su pasado será difícil y peligroso. La historia se desarrolla a principios del siglo pasado, la época que marca la muerte del viejo oeste para dar paso a una sociedad más “civilizada”, más urbana, y este es el escenario perfecto para el juego, que constantemente hará énfasis en el contrataste de las viejas costumbres con el nuevo estilo de vida americano.
La calidad visual del juego es algo que impresiona, sobre todo porque hasta ahora los jugadores estábamos dispuesto a aceptar que los gráficos de un mundo abierto no fueran los mejores debido al contenido descomunal de este género, Red Dead cambia esta idea y hace que el aspecto visual, el diseño, la ambientación y la iluminación cuenten con una calidad nunca antes vista, sin sacrificar ni un poco la extensión colosal de su mundo.
Como es costumbre con los juegos de Rockstar, los diálogos de los personajes son inteligentes y divertidos. Las actuaciones de todos ellos son de primer nivel. El sonido y la música están a la altura de las mejores películas de vaqueros. Y todo esto contribuye a crear una atmósfera realista y fascinante.
El sistema de juego te permite elegir la moral de tu personaje, si quieres ser un tipo que hace las cosas a la mala, que mata a la menor provocación o que rompe la ley siempre que se le presenta la oportunidad, puedes hacerlo, pero ello repercutirá en la forma en que los demás te traten, los precios de los objetos en las tiendas, el nivel de agresión de los adversarios, etc. Por otro lado, puedes ser misericordioso y atrapar vivos a tus enemigos, respetar la ley y ayudar a quienes estén en apuros, obteniendo así recompensas económicas y materiales y haciendo que los demás te admiren y te respeten.
La estructura del título es fiel a los juegos de Rockstar, donde debes ir interactuando con personajes importantes y completando las misiones que te van ofreciendo hasta obtener de cada uno lo que necesitas. La ventaja es que puedes saltar de un personaje a otro de forma no lineal y con bastante libertad. Entretanto, tendrás la oportunidad de realizar misiones extra, al igual que actividades y juegos muy diversos. Las actividades alternas son muchas, entretenidas y siempre acordes con la época y el tono: Puedes lazar caballos y domarlos, arrear ganado, atrapar cuatreros nocturnos, perseguir y atrapar vivos o muertos a criminales buscados por la ley, jugar poker o a los dados (sea de forma tradicional o haciendo trampa), jugar a clavar un cuchillo en medio de tus dedos sin lastimarte, apostar para ver quien puede lanzar mejor las herraduras, despellejar animales salvajes, encontrar tesoros escondidos, enfrentar duelos a muerte, etcétera, etcétera, etcétera.
El sistema de combate es bastante profundo y preciso, está basado en la habilidad de cubrirte y disparar, y ambos aspectos funcionan a la perfección. Pero además cuentas con la capacidad de entrar a una visión especial (dead eye), donde el tiempo se vuelve más lento, permitiéndote marcar a múltiples enemigos o hacer varios disparos a diferentes partes del cuerpo de uno solo.
Las armas son variadas y tratan, en la medida de lo posible, ser fieles a la época. Podrás encontrar fusiles, escopetas, revólveres, cuchillos e incluso torretas que parecen bastante precarias, pero que en realidad son tan letales y efectivas como las de cualquier otro juego.
El principal sistema de transporte es el caballo, montar bien es algo que tendrás que ir perfeccionando poco a poco, sobre todo porque deberás disparar y lazar con puntería desde tu caballo si esperas convertirte en un vaquero de verdad.
El protagonista puede desbloquear diferentes atuendos, pero hacerlo no será fácil, ya que debes reunir pedazos de telas cumpliendo tareas específicas que pueden ser bastante difíciles y complejas.
El juego incluye varias opciones de multijugador donde podrán participar hasta 16 personas al mismo tiempo. Una de las grandes innovaciones en este sentido es que cuenta con un modo que te permite explorar el mundo abierto, enfrentándote a los enemigos que te encuentres en el camino o participando en otras actividades grupales que sucedan de forma espontánea durante tu recorrido. Este modo traslada la sensación de libertad absoluta al multijugador. Conforme avances en este modo, tu personaje irá subiendo de nivel. También se incluyen los modos ya conocidos como capturar la bandera o defender un fuerte. Además, cada enfrentamiento comienza con un duelo masivo donde deberás, en serio, probar tus habilidades vaqueras.
Red Dead Repemption será definitivamente una saga tan importante como lo es Grand Theft Auto, por esa sola razón vale la pena jugarlo, pero además de todo te encontrarás con un mundo enorme y deslumbrante, al igual que una serie de actividades de lo más divertidas. Cómpralo ya en Initium Games.
